SERVICE DESCRIPTION
A psycho-educational program for patients and families related to chronic pain, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and muscle weakness.The Comfort Ability Program offers one-day workshops that is a specialized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) intervention for youth with chronic pain or discomfort and parents or caregivers.

The workshop helps youth and parents / caregivers learn how to better manage recurring functional symptoms such as chronic pain (nerve, muscle or joint pain, headaches, abdominal pain, etc.), nausea, dizziness, fatigue and muscle weakness. It explains how the nervous system works in the body and why skills rooted in psychology can help. It also gives youth and parents / caregivers the chance to learn and practice many proven coping skills based in CBT.

This service only accepts internal referrals from the Alberta Children's Hospital.

  2. Presence of chronic/recurrent pain or other related symptoms (headache, abdominal pain, neuropathic pain, musculoskeletal pain, nausea, fatigue, post injury pain, and disease related pain and/or discomfort)
  3. Experiencing daily functional impairment due to pain and/or discomfort in at least 2 areas:
    • Sleep
    • School
    • Daily activities (self-care, exercise)
    • Social/family life
  4. Youth and parent/caregiver willing to attend workshop and both have English speaking ability

General Information
  • We are a teaching center committed to excellence. A healthcare provider who is doing their clinical training at ACH may be involved in your child’s care. We appreciate your support of this learning opportunity and invite you to ask questions.
  • Clean hands prevent the spread of diseases and infections. We ask that you clean your hands when arriving and before leaving the hospital. Please also follow any posted guidelines. We are all responsible for keeping each other safe.
  • To protect everyone’s privacy, filming, recording or photographing anyone without their permission is not allowed.
  • There is a cafeteria and coffee shop on the main floor and a coffee shop on the 4th floor.
  • We encourage you to visit the Family & Community Resource Centre (FCRC) on the 2nd floor. You will find information on child health conditions, support and resources for families, and a charging station for phones.   • Emily's Backyard is a free, supervised play area that patients and/or siblings can use during a hospital stay or clinic visit. Children can stay for up to 1.5 hours. We ask that you book ahead by email at eby@ahs.ca or by calling 403-955-2500.
  • If you are 13 years or older, we encourage you to start learning about and preparing for your transition to adult healthcare. Talk to your healthcare team about this. For more information visit the Well on Your Way website

  • Every clinic should provide you with specific information about where the clinic is located, how long your appointment might be and how to prepare for it.
  • Please remember to bring:
    • Your child’s Alberta Health Care card.
    • Any information the clinic asked you to provide and/or any forms you were asked to fill out.
    • A list of all your child’s current medicines including any vitamins, supplements or other therapies used. To help with this, you can use our online medication lists and tools: Know your medicines
  • You may find it helpful to write down any questions or concerns you would like to discuss at your appointment.

PARKING INSTRUCTIONS
There is a large, indoor parkade beside the hospital’s front entrance. It is open 24 hours a day. A heated walkway connects the parkade to the hospital. Handicapped parking is located on each level near the elevators/entrance to the hospital.

There are two outdoor lots. One is outside the Emergency Department for emergency patients only. The other outdoor lot is by the Rehabilitation entrance on the south side of the building.
Please note, you will need to pay for parking when you arrive. Please be aware, there is NO street parking around the hospital.

AHS Parking App
– Download this free app to your mobile device. It allows you to pay for parking, receive alerts when parking time is about to expire, and extend or stop your parking time as needed. Use Zone 6013 for all ACH parking areas.

Paystations or Parking Office – You can pay at the Parking Office which is in the hallway between the parkade and the main entrance. You can also use any of the paystations that are located near the Parking Office, at all hospital entrances, and on each level of the parkade. They all accept cash, Visa, Mastercard or American Express. There is an ATM and change machine by the Parking Office if needed.

The primary purpose of the All Locations list is to let the user easily access any location of a healthcare service without going back to the main search screen.

The locations listed have 3 background colors:
  • Green means the healthcare service@location has referral information attached to it.
  • Brown means the healthcare service@location never had referral information attached to it, or it has unpublished referral information.
  • Red means
    • IA changed the healthcare service@location's status to something other than Current
    • It was deleted if it is an ARD healthcare service@location.
Green  and Brown are always at the top of the list. These are the Healthcare Service@Locations with the status of Current.
The Red list at the bottom consists of non-current Healthcare Service@locations that once had Published referral information in the ARD.
If the referral information was never published in ARD the Healthcare Service@location will not show in the Red list.

The secondary purpose of the All Locations list is to allow ARD Administrators to recover (copy) referral information from the non-current Healthcare Service@Locations to ones that are current.

Common Scenario:
A Healthcare Service moves from one location to another. In this case the IA Healthcare Service@Location record will be made defunct (non-current) and a new Healthcare Service@Location record will be created with a current status. In this scenario the captured referral guidelines in ARD can become "orphaned" as they are not attached to any current IA healthcare service.

Categories of non-current or orphaned referral guidelines: INDIVIDUAL and COMMON.
The REFERRAL GUIDELINES section of the profile has the prefix INDIVIDUAL or COMMON to help you choose the method below when transferring referral guidelines from a non-current Healthcare Service@Location to a current healthcare service@location.

Individual referral process
  1. Click on a non-current (Red) Healthcare Service@Location at the bottom of the All Locations list.
  2. The non-current referral info is displayed with the link Copy this Referral Process to another Healthcare Service@Location link on the upper right hand corner. Click on the copy link.
  3. Choose a current location (Green or Brown) from the All Locations list. This will be the Healthcare Service@Location you are pasting the referral info into.
  4. The system will display the Edit Referral Info screen populated with the referral info from the non-current Healthcare Service@Location you viewed in the first step.
  5. Click Save and the referral info is transferred from the non-current Healthcare Service@Location to the current one.
  6. Repeat these steps for each Healthcare Service@Location that needs attention.

Common referral process - 2 sub cases.
Case 1: At least 1 current Healthcare Service@Location with common referral info is with current status for this healthcare service; One or more Healthcare Healthcare Service@Locations where replaced by new one.
  1. Click on any current Healthcare Service@Location whether it has referral info (Green) or not (Brown).
  2. The healthcare service location opens in the Edit Referral Info screen populated with the current common referral info.
  3. Save it. 
  4. All locations will be updated with the common referral information, including all the locations that don't have referral info yet (Brown). The non-current referrals (Red) will also be updated.
Case 2:  All Healthcare Healthcare Service@Locations for a healthcare service are set to a non-current status and replaced by new ones. In this case there is no current additional referral info to copy from, so the only alternative is to pick up the non-current common referral process (Red). Follow the steps described in the section Individual Referral Process above to copy/paste the non-current common referral info to the current healthcare service locations.
Generally we want to replicate current common referral info to new or replaced healthcare service locations. We only resort to copying non-current common referral info if there is no other option.

Remember: Some fields can be location specific with the common referral process:
Parking Instructions, Directions, Parking Map, Wait Time, Referral Phone or Referral Fax.
To update these items you have to edit each Healthcare Service@Location separately.

ADDITONAL NOTES:
  • The info icon after the All Locations drop down will be visible to ARD Administrators.
  • The system doesn't allow you to copy referral information from one non-current Healthcare Service@Location to another.
