Pinecone Pediatrics is a referral-based community pediatrics, developmental pediatrics and pediatric neurology clinic in NW Calgary.
We are happy to accept referrals for children 0-18 years requiring consultation with pediatric specialists, developmental pediatricians or pediatric neurologists for medical. We have a single wait list, and do not discriminate based on the referral concern(s).Pinecone Pediatrics provides care to children who are referred by family physicians, nurse practitioners or emergency physicians for issues requiring the care of a pediatrician.
We provide assessment and ongoing care as required for children 0-18 with active medical, psychological, developmental or social issues.
Some common examples of services include assessment, treatment and monitoring for:
  • Growth and development,
  • Feeding or elimination difficulties,
  • School difficulties including ADHD and learning disorders,
  • Behavioral challenges including ASD and conduct disorders,
  • Medical issues related to any body system (including monitoring for at-risk complications),
  • Mental health challenges (including but not limited to anxiety, depression, eating disorders etc.)
  • Social challenges (including but not limited to children in care, victims of abuse/neglect, children at risk for poor outcomes from exposure to adverse childhood experiences),
  • Supporting families with navigating community resources for children with complex needs.
Pinecone Pediatrics is a referral-based community pediatrics, developmental pediatrics and pediatric neurology clinic in NW Calgary.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Inclusion Criteria
  • Patients must be between 0-18 years of age.
  • We accept out of province and uninsured patients who agree to our uninsured policy.
  • Children with a current pediatrician will be seen, and the consult will be forwarded to their current pediatrician (if not the referring physician).
Exclusion Criteria
  • Referrals for patients currently seeing another pediatrician.
  • Referrals declined by Developmental Pediatrics or Pediatric Neurology: Unless patients are already seeing a pediatrician at a different clinic, referrals declined by Drs Hustad or Sjonnesen will have the option to be automatically redirected to general pediatrics at Pinecone. Our office assistants will be in contact with the referring provider and family to confirm preference.
  • Children followed by developmental pediatrics at ACH / CDC or followed by another community-based developmental pediatrician.
  • We do not provide "well baby" or "well child" care.
  • We do not provide "pediatric assessments" without specific concerns previously highlighted by a referring provider.
Pediatric Neurology Exclusion Criteria
  • Acute neurologic concerns needing urgent care (e.g., daily seizures, acute regression, new focal neurological deficits)
  • Suspected infantile spasms
  • Neurodevelopmental concerns without neurologic features (e.g., isolated autism, ADHD, isolated speech delay)
  • Epilepsy requiring vagal nerve stimulation or ketogenic diet
  • Known brain tumors
  • Conditions better served by team-based care (e.g. CP, leukodystrophies, MS, mitochondrial disorders, severe neuromuscular disorders)
  • Isolated requests for EEG / MRI / medical cannabis authorization
  • Second opinions for patients already followed by tertiary neurology or other community-based pediatric neurologists.

Sarah welcomes referrals from GPs, NPs, pediatricians, or pediatric subspecialists for ASD, GDD or children with known neurodevelopmental disorders (including very severe ADHD) that would benefit from
  • Evaluation / diagnostic clarity
  • Pharmacological optimization
  • Support with identifying and accessing community resources or other allied health interventions.
Pediatric Neurology
Kirsten welcomes referrals from GPs, NPs, pediatricians, or pediatric subspecialists for:
  • Headache disorders and migraine
  • Motor development and movement concerns including tics and Tourette Syndrome (suspected or diagnosed)
  • Functional neurological symptoms/disorders (suspected or diagnosed)
  • Post-concussive symptoms
  • Neurodevelopmental disorders with additional neurological symptoms (e.g. query ADHD in a child with seizures)
  • Seizure and epilepsy disorders
    • Epilepsy (new or established diagnoses)
    • Query seizures, spells, or paroxysmal events of uncertain nature

MISSED APPOINTMENT GUIDELINES
We require 48 hours' notice (not including weekends or holidays) of canceled or changed appointments to avoid being billed our no-show fees as per the office policies. As a courtesy, families will receive reminders 7, 2 & 1 days prior to appointments, providing ample time to communicate. Families will be required to settle outstanding no-show fees prior to rebooking.
If families are running very late, appointments may be shortened or canceled out of respect for the physicians' time and subsequent appointments. Families may be required to pay no-show fees for appointments that get canceled for this reason.
Families are requested to contact the clinic ASAP so arrangements can be made when unexpected emergencies arise.
Patients may be discharged if we are unable to provide effective care due to multiple missed or late appointments. Re-referrals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Common Scenario:
A Healthcare Service moves from one location to another. In this case the IA Healthcare Service@Location record will be made defunct (non-current) and a new Healthcare Service@Location record will be created with a current status. In this scenario the captured referral guidelines in ARD can become "orphaned" as they are not attached to any current IA healthcare service.

Categories of non-current or orphaned referral guidelines: INDIVIDUAL and COMMON.
The REFERRAL GUIDELINES section of the profile has the prefix INDIVIDUAL or COMMON to help you choose the method below when transferring referral guidelines from a non-current Healthcare Service@Location to a current healthcare service@location.

Individual referral process
  1. Click on a non-current (Red) Healthcare Service@Location at the bottom of the All Locations list.
  2. The non-current referral info is displayed with the link Copy this Referral Process to another Healthcare Service@Location link on the upper right hand corner. Click on the copy link.
  3. Choose a current location (Green or Brown) from the All Locations list. This will be the Healthcare Service@Location you are pasting the referral info into.
  4. The system will display the Edit Referral Info screen populated with the referral info from the non-current Healthcare Service@Location you viewed in the first step.
  5. Click Save and the referral info is transferred from the non-current Healthcare Service@Location to the current one.
  6. Repeat these steps for each Healthcare Service@Location that needs attention.

Common referral process - 2 sub cases.
Case 1: At least 1 current Healthcare Service@Location with common referral info is with current status for this healthcare service; One or more Healthcare Healthcare Service@Locations where replaced by new one.
  1. Click on any current Healthcare Service@Location whether it has referral info (Green) or not (Brown).
  2. The healthcare service location opens in the Edit Referral Info screen populated with the current common referral info.
  3. Save it. 
  4. All locations will be updated with the common referral information, including all the locations that don't have referral info yet (Brown). The non-current referrals (Red) will also be updated.
Case 2:  All Healthcare Healthcare Service@Locations for a healthcare service are set to a non-current status and replaced by new ones. In this case there is no current additional referral info to copy from, so the only alternative is to pick up the non-current common referral process (Red). Follow the steps described in the section Individual Referral Process above to copy/paste the non-current common referral info to the current healthcare service locations.
Generally we want to replicate current common referral info to new or replaced healthcare service locations. We only resort to copying non-current common referral info if there is no other option.

Remember: Some fields can be location specific with the common referral process:
Parking Instructions, Directions, Parking Map, Wait Time, Referral Phone or Referral Fax.
To update these items you have to edit each Healthcare Service@Location separately.

ADDITONAL NOTES:
  • The info icon after the All Locations drop down will be visible to ARD Administrators.
  • The system doesn't allow you to copy referral information from one non-current Healthcare Service@Location to another.
