Calgary Adult ENT After Hours Referrals for Emergency & Urgent Care Providers for specific acceptance criteria.
Additional NotesNew patients must meet the following patient selection criteria:
- Referrals by Physicians, General dentists, Orthodontists, Oral Maxillofacial surgeons, Nurse practitioners.
Priority Urgent - seen in less than 4 weeks
Urgent - seen within 6 months
Routine - varies, general wait time is within 18-36 months
1. Dr Chau is the only Sleep surgeon in Western Canada and the only Sleep Surgeon in Canada performing advanced surgery for Sleep Disordered Breathing. Dr Chau provides consultation and treatment of patients from all across Canada but Alberta patients are prioritized.
2. Candidacy for Sleep surgery involves failure of non-surgical treatments such as CPAP. Referring healthcare providers (Physicians, Dentists, Nurse practitioners etc) must provide documentation attesting to CPAP trial and intolerance for all patients referred for sleep surgery consultation.
3. Patients referred for Sleep Surgery consultation must review, even if only briefly, the following educational websites prior to the initial visit
- www.sleepsurgerycanada.ca
4. Patients referred from out of province must first obtain approval from their Provincial Health Care insurance provider before they can be seen. This applies to both consultation and surgical services and may each require their own distinct approval.
5. Snoring (no sleep apnea) is unfortunately not considered "medically significant” in any jurisdiction in Canada and therefore not covered under any provincial health care insurance program. Therefore, both medical and surgical remedies involve out of pocket costs. While I accept most general ENT type consultation requests, the vast majority of my workload involves sleep disordered breathing surgery. I am currently the only Sleep Surgeon in Canada and see patients’ from across the Country, however, priority is given to Alberta patients. This unfortunately limits my ability to see general ENT referrals in a more timely manner.
